Reduce Your Risks
The American Heart Association (AHA) states that the six major risk factors for coronary artery disease are119:
- Cigarette and tobacco smoke
- High blood pressure
- High blood cholesterol
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Diabetes
Smoking is at the top of the list because it represents the single greatest preventable cause of death and disability. According to the AHA, smoking increases blood pressure, decreases exercise tolerance and increases the tendency for blood to clot. Moreover, smoking increases the risk of recurrent coronary events after bypass surgery. It also decreases HDL (good) cholesterol and, when combined with a family history of heart disease, greatly increases the likelihood of developing heart disease.119
Throughout the Hearts in Harmony® website, you will find recommendations to minimize your cardiovascular risks by working on your mind, body and soul and by stopping smoking. The challenge is yours!
