Recipe for Good Nutrition
"To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art."
– Francois de La Rochefoucauld, French author
Good nutrition is one of the fundamental building blocks of a healthy lifestyle. Everyone needs a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, along with vitamins and minerals to build and maintain muscle, repair tissues, regulate metabolism, and provide the body with energy. Just like a machine, the human body requires the right mixture of fuel to run smoothly and efficiently.
Healthy eating not only helps the body's systems run properly, but also can help prevent or slow down the progress of some diseases. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) can begin early in life, but you can slow the process, or even stop it altogether, by making important changes to your eating plan and lifestyle.74
Risks for developing disease also can be lessened with healthy eating. Major risk factors for a heart event – high-cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess body weight – all can be reduced by adhering to a good nutrition plan.75
As much as a healthy diet can prevent or reduce disease, a poor eating plan can contribute directly to poor health or even death. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, poor nutrition is among the major contributors to heart disease and cancer, our nation's leading killers.76
It's clear that healthy eating is critical for your overall health – and if you suffer from heart disease, it is an essential part of managing your disease and avoiding future heart events.
