Ingredients for a Healthy Eating Plan

Experts agree that a healthy eating plan77,78,79:

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fiber and fat-free or low-fat milk and equivalent milk products. Most fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients and have very few calories.
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans (legumes) and nuts.
  • Contains limited amounts of saturated and trans fats (fats that are artificially created through a chemical process of the hydrogenation of oils), cholesterol (a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells), salt (sodium) and added sugars.
  • Balances calorie intake with calorie needs. In other words, it's important to choose foods that are high in needed nutrients so that you can meet your nutritional needs, yet still stay within your recommended calorie intake for the day.

Most nutritional guidelines are built on these general rules, though some emphasize certain elements more than others and may differ in their recommended serving sizes.
