Does Music Therapy Work?
A recent study asked people with heart disease to choose the type of music – either classical, jazz or easy listening – that would be most relaxing for them. The results showed that simply listening to any of these genres of music significantly reduced the perception of physical pain, as well as the anxiety that people experienced after having heart surgery.19
Another study showed that music therapy significantly decreased anxiety in people who have suffered a heart attack. It found that people also experienced lowered blood pressure, as well as reduced heart and breathing rates after listening to only 20 minutes of music.18
