Before You Put on Those Sweats

If you have been diagnosed with heart disease, the first step in an exercise-based rehabilitation program is to talk to your doctor. In addition to helping create an appropriate routine and goals for success, your doctor may explain how to time your workout with your prescription schedule.117 He/she may also recommend that you undergo a "road test" or treadmill evaluation, especially if moderate-to-vigorous exercise is considered as part of the routine.

Most people with heart disease can safely follow a medically supervised fitness regimen. You should stop exercising and contact your doctor immediately, however, if you experience any of the following when you start your program113:

  • Pain or pressure in the left or mid-chest area, left neck, shoulder or arm during, or soon after, your work out
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness upon exertion
  • Extreme breathlessness after mild exertion
  • Unusual heart rhythm and/or palpitations
  • Abrupt weight gain and/or swelling of the ankles
