What is a Heart Event?

Within this website, the term “heart event” applies to a heart-related illness or incident such as a heart attack or chest pain (angina) that is often treated with angioplasty, that may include stenting.

Angina and heart attacks can both be caused by a lack of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. If plaque build-up in the arteries ruptures, blood will clot and seal the rupture. If the clot becomes large enough, it can severely narrow or completely block the the blood flow through a coronary artery. A heart event occurs when the clot limits or completely stops blood flow to the heart.1, 2

Stents may be used to treat narrowed arteries in the heart and can help to prevent narrowing or blocking of the arteries after they are placed.3
