Protecting Your Heart by Taking Your Medication

"Drugs don't work in patients who don't take them."
– Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D.

If you are a heart patient who has suffered from a heart attack, or other cardiac event, you have likely been asked by your doctor to make certain lifestyle changes such as eating in a heart-healthy way and optimizing your physical activity. You also are likely to have been prescribed several different medications.

Taking your medications consistently as prescribed is very important.54 In tandem with an overall healthy lifestyle, these medications play a key role in reducing your risk for a cardiac event.

According to one study, patients who take their medications are more likely to survive one year after a heart attack than those who do not continue to take one or more of their medications.55 An additional study suggests that patients who consistently take their medications display higher rates of survival from heart disease.54

Once you have suffered from a heart attack, your risk of suffering another attack increases.56 Therefore, it is important to remember that taking your medications properly can have a major impact on your health.
